One Year’s Soldiering by F. F. Kiner
Embracing the battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh and the capture of two hundred officers and men of the Fourteenth Iowa Infantry, and their confinement six months and a half in rebel prisons.
Published by Morgan Avenue Press
One Year’s Soldiering is a book, which was originally printed in 1863, while the Civil War was still being fought. It’s a history of the 14th Iowa Infantry and covers their enlistment, camp life, various battles including Fort Donelson and Shiloh, and their capture and imprisonment in southern prisons from Alabama to Georgia. This book is perhaps the most detailed account there is of a southern prison known as Camp Oglethorpe in Macon, Georgia.
145 years later the Morgan Avenue Press offers this nearly lost piece of Midwest Civil War history. Not only has the original book been reprinted in its entirety, many additional items have been added, such as:
Historical commentary by Lt. Col John Duquette, US Army.
Index of people, places and battles.
Regimental history and rosters.
Letters and newspaper articles written during and after the war from such papers as the Mount Pleasant Home Journal, Ida County Pioneer, and Des Moines Register.
Brief history of F. F. Kiner and his family.
Original Printing Lancaster, PA. 1863 E. H. Thomas, Printer.
